     Sports Injuries

Muscle strains, Ligament & Tendon Sprains- Most of those who partake in sport have had one if not all of the above. These can be caused by abnormal biomechanics, muscle imbalances, overuse or trauma. The key to recovery is an accurate assessment, diagnosis and treatment in combination with an individual rehabilitation programme which can be prescribed by our staff. Further emphasis will be placed on the prevention of injury recurrence.

Shin Splints- "Shin Splints" is a common term for shin pain during running. It can be a misleading term and most sports medicine professionals try to avoid using it. It is related to pain felt in the inner side of the shin during or following exercise. 'Shin Splints' and shin pain can be due to several different conditions. One of the most common shin conditions that are frequently labelled 'Shin Splints' is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome. Other causes include abnormal foot biomechanics and leg length inequality.

Runners Knee- Runner's Knee is a painful overuse knee injury that affects the outer part of the knee. It is fairly common in runners and cyclists. It is reported to affect 2-10% of all runners, while around a quarter of all knee injuries in cyclists are diagnosed as Runner's Knee.
Typically there is pain located on the outer side of the knee joint. This pain may radiate up the thigh or down the outer side of the shin and is exacerbated by running or cycling activities. Usually, the pain from Runner's Knee is only present during activity and settles when the person rests. However, in some cases it can also be extremely uncomfortable going up or down stairs. There are many causes of this problem, some of which include abnormal biomechanics, incorrect seating and foot position on the bike.

The treatment of the above stated problems will depend on the specific cause and nature of the presentation. We can offer clients a variety of treatments depending on the specific problems. Treatments offered include soft tissue mobilisation and massage, Electrotherapy, Biomechanical assessment and correction, Exercise prescription, Peripheral joint mobilizations, Ergonomic correction and advice, Cryotherapy and heat therapy. Your therapist will guide you on the appropriate treatments and aftercare.
